    Making A Difference Rich Salvaggio

Teleflora is committed to providing the most current and up-to-date educational information to our members and to the floral industry.

The Industry Relations department, through its extensive Arts and Education Program, offers over 350 programs a year. Sponsored by our Units, these educational events based on design, business and technology are held throughout the country and are available to florists everywhere. The cost is minimal and we provide the very finest educators in the industry.

In addition to education, the Units program also provides benevolent opportunities for the industry and the consumer. The largest coordinated effort each year is the Make Someone Smile® Week.

Make Someone Smile® Week has become a very important part of the Units Program throughout the United States. This past year our unit boards and other volunteer florists got together during the week of July 19 to 25, 2009 to create over 37,000 arrangements that were distributed to hospitals, nursing homes, hospice care facilities, meals on wheels and others in need of a smile. Each of our Units coordinates the process of spreading smiles on behalf of Teleflora in their local area.

The Unit boards and other florist volunteers request fresh flower donations from their local wholesalers and growers. Teleflora donates the quantity of Be Happy® mugs needed to create the arrangements. Then, the volunteers get together and create the arrangements and they are delivered to the recipients. Five years ago, over 25,000 people were the grateful and very emotional recipients of flowers. Four years ago, there were over 35,000 recipients. Three years ago we delivered over 40,000 mugs across the United States and Canada and . In 2009, once again, the project brought smiles to over 37,000 recipients.  The goal for 2010 is over 40,000 mugs. What an exciting and heartfelt group of Teleflora volunteers to make this project so very successful.

When asked why we spearhead such a project, the answer is apparent in the following quote from J. Scott Hasty, a past president of the Lone Star Unit and owner of j. scott’s, Aflorist: When a little lady tells me she has not received flowers since her wedding day as I hand her a Be Happy® mug, and a tear drops from here eye, I am reminded of the reason that I am in this business.

Get involved with your local unit and become part of this very successful benevolent project. Call your local unit president or contact Industry Relations at 800.321.2654, extension 3591 to find out how you can participate.

Help make a difference by sharing the beauty and emotion of flowers.
